My group and I decided that for our mini-brief we would create a clip featuring a marriage proposal. Firstly, we researched the romance genre. Typically, the romance genre will explore one of the following themes: love at first sight, forbidden love, love triangles and sacrificial love. Films in the romance genre vary in tone and usually end with a 'happily ever after' or with the tragic death of one of the protagonists - either way, films within the romance genre aim to provoke strong emotions in the audience.
Audience
The romantic genre is normally aimed at a female audience because it is widely known that females are much more emotional than males and will therefore have a greater reaction to an emotional film. In traditional romantic films the ending is a 'happy ever after' where the protagonists end up together and/or get married. The story generally involves complications between the couple such as another love interest or something getting in the way of them becoming a couple, for example: having to move away for a job.
Mise-en-Scene
The traditional mise-en-scene for romance films includes flowers (especially roses), hearts, rings and candles.
Lighting
The lighting in romance films is traditionally warm to create an inviting, romantic atmosphere. Some scenes are brightly lit, making them more upbeat and cheerful, whilst more 'low-key', shadowy scenes are more sensual and intriguing. The lighting is also usually quite soft, making the film more sentimental.
Characters
In romance films there is traditionally two protagonists: a male and a female. From the beginning of the film it is made obvious to the audience that these two characters are going to be involved romantically. These two characters may meet another character who disrupts their relationship and pushed the couple apart, testing their love for one another.
